Kazakhstan presented plans to achieve carbon neutrality

Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan Bakhyt Sultanov reported on the work carried out within the framework of the Paris Agreement goals at the Green Agenda in CIS countries forum on March 19, QazaqGreen reports citing Kazpravda.kz.

"According to expert calculations, in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, the energy intensity of Kazakhstan's GDP until 2030 should decrease by 38.9%, and the share of coal in the structure of electricity generation should decrease from the current 68.9% to 40.1% due to natural attrition," Bakhyt Sultanov said.

Measures will also be taken to develop electric transport, sustainable agriculture and other sectors of the economy. To strengthen international cooperation and reduce negative consequences, climate change adaptation norms were introduced into Kazakhstani national legislation. This will create an effective system for building local resilience to climate change.

According to the deputy minister, Kazakhstan is also working to bring its national emissions trading system closer to the European system through several international projects. Subsequently, this will stimulate domestic reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to achieve the Paris Agreement commitments.

"The world today needs decisive action by countries. Solving the global problem of climate change requires the active participation and involvement of all stakeholders, so achieving this goal directly depends on our joint and fruitful work," said Bakhyt Sultanov.
