President of Kazakhstan addresses Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Week Summit

QAZAQ GREEN. During his official visit to the United Arab Emirates, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev participated in the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Development Week Summit, which brought together global leaders and experts to discuss critical sustainability challenges, Akorda reports.

President Tokayev opened the summit with a speech addressing the pressing global issues of climate change, desertification, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and food security. He pointed out that these challenges are further aggravated by geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global supply chains.

In his speech, the President outlined Kazakhstan's comprehensive strategy to tackle these challenges, focusing on three key areas: digitalisation and artificial intelligence, major infrastructure projects, and nuclear energy. He highlighted the significant role energy systems play in global greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, emphasizing that international partners such as Masdar, Total, and Eni have committed to implementing green energy projects in Kazakhstan with a total capacity of 43 GW. He also noted that the construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, which received approval through a national referendum, marks a pivotal step toward achieving sustainable energy development. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Kazakhstan's commitment to diversifying the supply of critical raw materials to global markets, which are essential for meeting international carbon reduction targets.

Continuing his address, the President underscored the critical importance of transport infrastructure for Kazakhstan’s sustainable development. As a leading transit hub in Eurasia, Kazakhstan has been heavily investing in roads, railways, airports, and seaports. He stated that the country aims to enhance regional and global connectivity through projects such as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the North-South Transport Corridor, and its active participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. These efforts, he explained, are designed to create sustainable supply chains that foster economic growth and strengthen regional ties.

Addressing the issue of climate change, the President highlighted the significant challenges posed by global warming in Central Asia, noting that it threatens ecosystems, living conditions, and food security. He called for immediate action to implement climate adaptation strategies, particularly in the region's reliance on transboundary rivers. To address these issues, he proposed investments in water-saving technologies, modernisation of irrigation systems, effective water management agreements, and the use of advanced tools such as artificial intelligence and satellite monitoring.

The President also drew attention to the issue of food security, stressing the importance of innovative solutions to stabilise global food and fertiliser supplies. As one of the world’s major exporters of wheat and flour, Kazakhstan is committed to improving sustainable agriculture practices and advancing agricultural technologies to contribute to global food stability.

In his closing remarks, President Tokayev emphasised the need for a new paradigm of global development based on sustainability, justice, and stability. He proposed a holistic framework built on three principles: increasing access to green finance, enhancing international cooperation in technology transfer and research, and integrating climate action with economic growth and artificial intelligence. He noted that artificial intelligence alone could contribute over 16% of global GDP by 2030, underscoring the importance of a flexible approach to addressing the diverse development goals of nations.

President Tokayev expressed hope that the summit would serve as a milestone for defining global priorities and aligning collective efforts toward sustainable development over the coming decades.

Among other notable speakers at the summit were President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of Finland, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia.
