Masdar and Samruk-Kazyna sign major agreement to advance clean energy in Kazakhstan

QAZAQ GREEN. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar and Samruk-Kazyna JSC, focused on the development of renewable energy and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Kazakhstan, Masdar reports.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Astana, where Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, and Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of Samruk-Kazyna, exchanged signed documents.
Under the agreement, the two parties will explore the development of a 24/7 renewable energy project with up to 500 megawatts (MW) of baseload capacity and BESS projects of up to 2 gigawatts (GW). Masdar is already working on a 1GW wind power plant with a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery storage system in the Jambyl region — one of the largest wind initiatives in Central Asia.
During the event, the governments of Kazakhstan and the UAE also ratified an agreement on the 1GW wind project, marking a significant milestone in its progress. The project is expected to start construction in 2026, following agreements signed at COP28 and COP29.
Samruk-Kazyna CEO Nurlan Zhakupov highlighted that the partnership aligns with Kazakhstan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, while Dr. Al Jaber noted the importance of leveraging clean energy expertise to support energy security and economic diversification.
Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi emphasized Kazakhstan’s strategic role in the company’s regional operations, adding that the agreement strengthens collaboration with Samruk-Kazyna.
Kazakhstan aims to generate 15% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and 50% by 2050. Masdar, which targets a global portfolio of 100GW by 2030, has expanded its renewable energy activities across Central Asia, including in Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
Earlier this year, Masdar unveiled the world’s first gigascale 24/7 solar and battery storage project in Abu Dhabi, featuring 5.2GW of solar PV and 19GWh of BESS, capable of delivering 1GW of baseload power daily.
