Kazakhstan showcases renewable energy investment opportunities at Power Central Asia + China Forum

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan presented its rapidly growing renewable energy sector at the Power Central Asia + China regional forum, highlighting its ambitious plans and the progress already achieved.
Over the past decade, the installed capacity of renewable energy facilities in the country has grown more than 17-fold, reaching 3,082 MW. Today, green energy accounts for 6.43% of Kazakhstan’s total electricity generation.
This impressive growth is the result of a consistent government policy aimed at building a clean, stable, and economically efficient energy system. Since 2018, Kazakhstan has implemented a transparent auction mechanism that has attracted around 260 companies from 13 countries. This has not only expanded generation capacity, but also significantly lowered electricity tariffs—by nearly half for wind energy and by 2.5 times for solar power.
Kazakhstan has created some of the most attractive investment conditions in the region, including 20-year power purchase agreements, tariff indexation, and investment incentives. The overarching goals are to improve environmental outcomes, strengthen energy independence, introduce cutting-edge technologies, and generate highly skilled employment.
Key achievements and near-term plans include:
-
156 renewable energy facilities are currently in operation, including 63 wind and 48 solar power plants.
- In 2025, nine new facilities with a combined capacity of 455.5 MW will be commissioned.
- Strategic investors from China, France, the UAE, and Russia are involved in projects with a total planned capacity of around 5 GW.
The government aims to raise the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 15%. To this end, 91 new projects with a total capacity of 2,258 MW are slated for commissioning by 2030, bringing total installed renewable capacity to 10 GW.
Particular emphasis is being placed on projects that enhance energy system reliability. A national hydropower development plan has been approved, and construction of pumped storage power plants (PSPPs) is underway to enable efficient energy accumulation and storage.
Kazakhstan’s transition to a green economy remains a key national priority—anchored in sustainable development, energy security, and the adoption of advanced global technologies.
