Volkswagen plant in Poland uses solar power
QAZAQ GREEN. On September 27, the Volkswagen plant in Poznań, Poland, achieved a significant milestone by operating entirely on solar energy for the first time. The plant's website reports that a new solar facility provided 100% of the factory’s electricity needs for that day.
This solar power plant consists of 25,000 panels spread over 22 hectares, an area larger than 31 football fields, with a total capacity of 15.2 MW. Under optimal weather conditions, this capacity is sufficient to meet the plant’s entire electricity demand.
Built in two phases in partnership with Quanta Energy, the solar plant is expected to cover about 20% of the facility's yearly electricity consumption. The Poznań plant, which produces the Volkswagen Crafter among other models, is part of the automaker’s broader initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.
Volkswagen Poznań has been committed to environmental sustainability for years. Since 2019, the plant has been powered exclusively by renewable energy. This partnership with Quanta Energy will continue, with plans already in place for further solar investments. Construction is set to begin soon on a new 3.1 MW solar farm in Września, covering 4.27 hectares, alongside a 6.5 MW rooftop installation. Września offers particularly favorable conditions for these projects, and the large available space provides opportunities to further diversify energy sources.
In addition, Volkswagen has initiated the process for installing wind turbines, which, along with its solar investments, will support the company’s decarbonization strategy and help stabilize future energy costs.
