Solar power plant launched at Alikhan Bokeikhan University

QAZAQ GREEN. Alikhan Bokeikhan University has implemented a project aimed at using renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports.
The project, implemented in line with the university's principles of sustainable development, contributes to the modernization of educational infrastructure and creates opportunities for students to gain practical experience with modern energy technologies.
A total of 96 solar panels with a combined capacity of 59 kW have been installed on the roof of the university campus. According to preliminary calculations, the power plant will generate about 60,000 kWh of electricity per year. This will cover up to 50% of the electricity needs of the connected facilities. The use of solar energy will not only increase the volume of electricity generated but also reduce the environmental burden. As a result of the project, annual carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by approximately 31 tons.
The solar power plant will be used not only to meet the university's energy needs, but also as a practical base for educational and research processes. Students will be able to study the operating principles of photovoltaic systems, assess the efficiency of solar panels, and analyze electricity generation indicators. In addition, the project creates opportunities for conducting research and developing practical solutions in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and green technologies.
The project is a practical example of implementing the principles of sustainable development at higher education institutions. The use of renewable energy sources, improved energy efficiency, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions contribute to strengthening the university's environmental responsibility and improving the efficiency of energy consumption on campus.
These indicators are taken into account in international sustainability rankings, including the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, and the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Thus, the launch of the solar power plant contributes to expanding the university's role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and creates additional opportunities for improving its standing in international sustainability rankings.
