Ferrari shuts down trigeneration plant to focus on renewable energy

QAZAQ GREEN. Ferrari has shut down its trigeneration plant at the Maranello factory ahead of schedule as part of its plan to reduce methane gas use and increase reliance on renewable energy. The plant, which had been generating electricity, heat, and cooling since 2009, was originally slated for closure later this year. This move aligns with Ferrari's decarbonization strategy, aiming for a 60% annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions and a 70% cut in methane gas consumption.
The trigeneration system, which once produced around 120 GWh of electricity annually through methane gas engines, had been a symbol of high-efficiency technology. Now, Ferrari plans to double its installed photovoltaic systems, targeting a 10-megawatt peak (MWp) by 2030, up from the current 5 MWp. This will contribute to meeting 40% of the energy needs at the Maranello site through self-produced and renewable energy sourced via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Ferrari has also upgraded its electrical infrastructure, including the renovation of the Maranello facility's substation and the installation of new transformers. The company’s total energy consumption in 2023 saw a 4% decrease compared to 2022, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency.
Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna called the plant’s shutdown a historic step toward carbon neutrality by 2030, highlighting the company’s shift toward renewable electricity and other energy-efficient innovations.
