KazMunayGas launches pilot green hydrogen project in Atyrau

QAZAQ GREEN. KazMunayGas has completed the first phase of a pilot green hydrogen production project in Atyrau, implemented by its subsidiary KMG Engineering LLP in partnership with the Kazakh company Green Spark, the company announced.
As part of the first stage, 336 solar panels with a total capacity of 200 kW were installed. This setup now partially powers the laboratory building and helps save around 12 million tenge annually on electricity costs.
The next phase of the project will involve installing an electrolyser to produce green hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using solar energy. This will establish a closed-loop system on site — from clean energy generation to hydrogen production and its use for heating and electricity.
In addition to its practical applications, the project also serves a research purpose: it will test hydrogen energy technologies under the specific climatic and operational conditions of western Kazakhstan. If successful, the model could be replicated at other KazMunayGas facilities as part of the company’s low-carbon development strategy through 2060.
