Germany leads EU in wind turbine construction

QAZAQ GREEN. Germany built more wind turbines last year than any other European country, Delfi reports citing DPA.
Industry association WindEurope reports that Germany added over 4 gigawatts (GW) of new wind power capacity—both onshore and offshore—leading the EU in expansion. The UK followed with 1.9 GW, France with 1.7 GW, and Finland with 1.4 GW.
In 2024, the EU installed around 13 GW of new wind power capacity—falling short of expectations. WindEurope’s Pierre Tardieu called this disappointing.
The association points to several obstacles: insufficient grid infrastructure, slow permitting processes in many countries, and challenging economic conditions. Limited port capacity and a shortage of specialized vessels are also slowing the growth of offshore wind farms. Across Europe, a total of 16.4 GW of new wind capacity was installed in 2024.
Europe currently has 285 GW of installed wind power. However, the EU needs to add 30 GW annually to meet its climate targets. WindEurope estimates that 186 GW of new capacity will be installed between 2025 and 2030.
By 2030, renewables should account for 42.5% of the EU's total energy consumption. To reach this goal, wind energy deployment must accelerate significantly.
In 2024, Germany approved a record-breaking 14 GW of new wind power projects. WindEurope is optimistic that the country’s new government will continue driving wind energy growth, reinforcing Germany’s leadership in the sector.
