Germany covers nearly 56% of 2025 electricity use with renewables

QAZAQ GREEN. Germany’s renewable power generation reached a new high in 2025, covering almost 56 percent of national electricity demand, according to preliminary calculations by the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries. A decline in wind and hydropower caused by weak weather conditions was offset by a sharp rise in solar output driven by continued large-scale PV deployment.
Solar generation increased by 18.7 percent year-on-year, with PV installations added in 2024 and 2025 delivering full-year production for the first time. From April to August monthly solar output exceeded ten billion kWh. More than 17 GW of new PV capacity was installed in 2025, matching the previous year’s level.
Onshore wind generation fell by 5.2 percent due to an exceptionally weak first quarter, the calmest March since 1950. Improved wind conditions in summer and a strong October partially compensated the drop. Offshore wind output remained stable. Hydropower output declined by 24.1 percent because of below-average precipitation.
Total electricity production reached 498.9 billion kWh, up 0.8 percent from 2024. Renewables generated 288.7 billion kWh. Fossil-fuel generation amounted to 210.2 billion kWh. Gross power consumption decreased slightly.
Sector representatives warn that further progress depends on regulatory clarity, expansion of flexible capacity and continued grid reinforcement. They underline the need for hydrogen-ready generation and seasonal storage to stabilize supply during periods of low wind and hydropower production.
