Nurlan Kapenov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Qazaq Green RES Association, spoke about Kazakhstan's plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 during Energy Week Central Asia & Mongolia in Tashkent.

"At the end of 2020, Kazakhstan joined the global movement to achieve carbon neutrality goals. On behalf of the Head of State, a Strategy for achieving carbon neutrality of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2060 is being developed," he said.

According to the Chairman of the Association, the transition to carbon neutrality in Kazakhstan until 2060 will require a profound transformation of the entire energy sector, including the extraction of primary energy, transportation, conversion into secondary energy, transmission and distribution, the final demand for energy services in transport, buildings and industry, as well as fugitive emissions during the extraction, transportation and distribution of primary energy.

According to the draft Strategy, the decarbonization of the energy sector will require large investments, in order to stimulate significant changes in the behavior of energy end-users. It will be achieved by replacing existing worn-out equipment and infrastructure at the end of their economic life with carbon-free and low-carbon equipment.

"A zero-carbon future by 2060 in Kazakhstan is technically possible and economically feasible. Kazakhstan has the necessary resources and human capital for a successful transformation. Achieving this goal will require deep structural changes in the entire economy and, above all, a fundamental transformation of the energy sector," noted Nurlan Kapenov.

Recall, the conference is held in the capital of Uzbekistan from 26 to 28 April, it aims to bring together representatives of government agencies, energy companies and renewable energy projects from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Mongolia, as well as representatives of international financial institutions and development organizations, international energy companies.
