New wind farm in Almaty region to reduce GHG emissions by up to 206 tonnes

A new wind power plant (WPP) in the Almaty region with a capacity of 60 MW is planned to be commissioned by early August this year, Qazaq Green reports citing the press office of Samruk-Energy.

"The WPP will generate 225.7 million kWh of electricity per year. The construction and commissioning of the WPP will reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by up to 206,000 tonnes," the press office said.

The power facility is being built in Enbekshikazakhskiy District of Almaty Oblast in the so-called Shelek Corridor, a unique region for developing renewable energy potential, where the average annual wind speed at an altitude of 50 metres is 7.8 m/s, and the flux density is 310 W/m2. In the future, the capacity of the wind power plant is planned to be increased to 300 MW.

According to Samruk-Energy, the total cost of the project is 37.4 billion tenge/ the project provides for the construction of 24 wind power units, each with a nominal capacity of 2.5 MW, substations, overhead transmission lines and related infrastructure. The main equipment of the plant is manufactured by GoldWind. The project is being implemented by Kazakhstan's electric power holding Samruk-Energy JSC in partnership with the Chinese Power China Corporation.

Samruk-Energy JSC has five RES facilities in operation. Their total volume of electricity generation for 2021 was 325.3 mln kWh. This is 7.7% of the volume of electric power generated by all RES facilities in Kazakhstan.

At present, in addition to wind power plants in the Almaty region, Samruk-Energy is implementing a project to build a wind power plant near Ereymentau, Akmola region, with a capacity of 50 MW.
