Kazakh Minister of Energy Bolat Akchulakov has reported about the energy balance until 2035 at the Central Communications Service, Qazaq Green reports. 

Electricity consumption in Kazakhstan by 2035 is projected to be about 153 bln kWh. At the same time, due to decommissioning, depreciation, and tougher environmental sanctions, the generation of existing energy sources will drop to less than 89 bln kWh.

In this regard, Kazakhstan will need to ensure the massive commissioning of new generating capacity, mostly from low-carbon generation sources, including renewable energy sources (RES) facilities. 

The generation sector is affected by many environmental mitigation factors, including Kazakhstan's commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (by 2030, 15% reduction from the 1990 level) and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

The need for baseload generation for stable operation of the country's energy system, low installed capacity utilisation rate and instability of RES generation, the global carbon neutrality agenda, and Kazakhstan's commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions require the development of safe and stable nuclear power in Kazakhstan. 

In this regard, the Ministry of Energy is considering the scenario of introducing generation from nuclear power plants in addition to enhancing conventional and renewable energy capacity. "According to experts, the structure of new energy capacities required to be commissioned by 2035 may be as follows:

- over 5 GW of gas generation;
- over 2 GW of hydroelectric power plants;
- over 1.5 GW of coal generation;
- over 6 GW of renewable energy sources;
- over 2 GW of nuclear power," Bolat Akchulakov said. 

It will cover the deficit of both basic and regulated capacity, ensuring the independence of the energy system from regulation by the energy systems of neighbouring states.
