Kazakhstan and China discuss energy partnership ahead of Central Asia–China Summit

QAZAQ GREEN. From 2 to 7 June 2025, a delegation from the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, led by Deputy Minister Bakytzhan Ilyas, held a roadshow in Beijing under the theme “Kazakhstan – an Industrial Hub for the Energy Transition”. The event was organised with the support of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in China, according to the Ministry's press service.
During the roadshow, representatives of the Ministry highlighted key priorities in Kazakhstan’s energy sector development, with a particular focus on the country’s strategic role in the global energy transition.
Following the presentation session, Deputy Minister Ilyas chaired a roundtable with leading Chinese energy companies to discuss potential areas of cooperation. Topics included the joint development of a sectoral centre for technological competence, localisation of equipment manufacturing within Kazakhstan’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and the training of qualified personnel to support the energy transition.
As part of the visit, Deputy Minister Ilyas also held bilateral meetings with major Chinese energy corporations, including China Southern Power Grid, Huawei, Power China, and China Datang, to explore opportunities for investment projects aligned with Kazakhstan’s industrial and green energy policies.
The meetings concluded with both sides expressing their commitment to deepening cooperation and moving forward with concrete project proposals. The possibility of formalising agreements during the upcoming Central Asia–China Summit, to be held in Astana on 16–17 June, was also discussed.
