Clean energy gains momentum: Kazakhstan’s renewable capacity expands fourteenfold

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan continued to scale up renewable energy development last year, with installed capacity showing steady growth, Finprom.kz reports.

As of the end of 2025, 162 renewable energy facilities were operating nationwide, with a combined installed capacity of 3.5 gigawatts. The portfolio includes 67 wind farms, 49 solar power plants, 43 hydropower facilities, and 3 biogas plants.

The long-term trajectory underscores the scale of progress. In 2015, Kazakhstan had just 48 renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 251 megawatts. Over ten years, the number of installations increased 3.4 times, while total capacity expanded nearly fourteenfold.

By the end of 2025, renewables accounted for 7% of total electricity generation, marking a clear shift toward a more balanced and sustainable energy mix. A decade earlier, their share was below 1%, highlighting the tangible impact of policy measures and new capacity additions.

In 2025 alone, nine new renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 503 megawatts were commissioned. These included five wind farms totaling 387 megawatts, three solar power plants with 90 megawatts, and one hydropower plant with a capacity of 26 megawatts. The projects are located in the Karaganda, Ulytau, Aktobe, Zhetysu, Kyzylorda, and Mangistau regions.

Auctions remain a core mechanism for market development. Under the 2024–2027 auction plan, projects totaling 6.7 gigawatts are scheduled for allocation. By December 2025, around 4 gigawatts had already been awarded, reflecting strong investor interest and an active green power market.

Looking ahead, Kazakhstan plans to implement major international projects involving strategic investors such as Total Eren, Masdar, China Power International Holding, and China Energy. A wide range of measures has also been taken to improve legislation supporting the use of renewable energy. A recent report on this area, published on the official website of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, is available here.

By 2035, the country aims to bring more than 8 gigawatts of renewable capacity online, reinforcing its commitment to the green transition, stronger energy security, and a more resilient national energy system.
