Edison to construct over 500 MW of new renewable plants in 2026 in Italy

QAZAQ GREEN. Italian energy company Edison has announced plans to begin construction of more than 500 MW of new renewable energy capacity in 2026, reinforcing its position as one of the main winners of Italy’s FER-X auctions. The announcement adds to the 250 MW already under construction. The new rollout includes more than 300 MW of wind power — including full repowering with latest-generation turbines — and around 200 MW of new solar capacity, with projects concentrated in Piedmont, Abruzzo, Campania, Apulia and Sicily.
The new sites represent investments exceeding €600 million and are expected to involve about 1,000 workers and 200 supplier companies.
Edison CEO Nicola Monti said the company is accelerating its renewables expansion:
“This excellent result allows us to accelerate our growth in renewables, aiming to double our installed green capacity and make a concrete contribution to Italy’s decarbonisation targets.”
In 2025, Edison completed around 200 MW of new renewable projects, including photovoltaic plants in Sicily (55 MW), Campania (27 MW), Veneto (16 MW) and repowered wind farms in Basilicata (9 MW) and Abruzzo (80 MW), doubling output while reducing the number of turbines by 73%.
Marco Stangalino, Executive Vice President for Power Assets, stated that Edison will complete a further 250 MW of wind and solar capacity in 2026 while also opening additional construction sites for more than 500 MW. The company is also advancing energy-storage initiatives, including hydroelectric pumping, to strengthen system flexibility.
The new projects will benefit from Edison’s financing agreement with the European Investment Bank, which has opened a credit line of up to €800 million. The first €200 million loan agreement was signed on 21 November.
Edison is conducting territorial assessments in southern Italy to identify suitable areas for five new pumped-hydro projects targeting at least 500 MW of storage.
Edison currently operates around 8 GW of installed capacity across Italy, including hydropower, wind, solar and high-efficiency gas-fired plants prepared for hydrogen use.
