Spain develops advanced energy storage platform with solar and hydrogen

QAZAQ GREEN.  Fundación Ciudad de la Energía has completed the hybridization of three battery energy storage systems, marking a key step in the development of green hydrogen and sustainable synthetic fuels.

The integrated system combines solar power generation, three different battery technologies, and two electrolyzers. The storage system has a capacity of 1 MW and 8 MWh, including a 100 kW experimental module. Once fully integrated, total storage capacity will reach around 15 MWh.

The facility incorporates sodium-sulfur, lithium-ion, and vanadium redox flow batteries. The latter offer long lifespans of over 20 years and flexible scalability. The installation is one of Spain’s most advanced demonstration platforms and includes the largest vanadium flow battery in Europe.

Energy generated by a 2.2 MW solar plant can be stored and used to power two types of electrolyzers: a high-temperature solid oxide system and a proton exchange membrane unit.

The project is funded by the European Union under recovery and resilience programs and aims to generate technical data for scaling up technologies and supporting industrial decarbonization.
