GBE publishes Strategic Plan to accelerate the UK’s clean energy future

QAZAQ GREEN. Great British Energy has published its first Strategic Plan, outlining how the publicly owned company intends to accelerate the UK’s shift to clean power and strengthen the country’s industrial base. The document sets priorities for the next five years and demonstrates how public ownership can drive investment, support jobs and deliver tangible benefits to communities.
According to the plan, by 2030 GBE aims to deliver:
• at least 15 GW of new clean generation and storage capacity, enough to power the equivalent of nearly 10 million homes;
• up to £15 billion in mobilised private capital through GBE-backed projects and long-term partnerships;
• support for more than 1,000 local and community energy initiatives;
• over 10,000 jobs across the UK, including in regions traditionally reliant on oil and gas;
• a revenue-generating asset portfolio with returns reinvested into further capacity and opportunities.
GBE will operate both as a developer and an equity investor, securing a long-term public stake in clean energy infrastructure and reinvesting generated income into new projects.
The plan highlights three priority investment areas:
• GBE Local — ensuring communities and public services directly benefit from local clean energy assets;
• Onshore Energy — unlocking land-based energy potential and strengthening grid stability;
• Offshore Energy — accelerating the UK’s position in deep-water offshore wind and supporting long-term sector growth.
The document also details the £1 billion “Energy – Engineered in the UK” programme, aimed at strengthening domestic supply chains and supporting the delivery of the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
GBE CEO Dan McGrail said the plan demonstrates how public ownership can unlock investment, power communities and create jobs. Chair Juergen Maier stressed that the strategy puts the public at the centre of the energy transition. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband added that GBE is intended to become a national champion that helps harness the UK’s natural energy resources and provide abundant clean power.
Great British Energy was established by the UK Government to accelerate the transition to clean, home-grown energy, create high-quality jobs and enhance the country’s energy independence. The full Strategic Plan will be published on 4 December.
