Renewables covered 24.5% of Moldova’s electricity use in 2025

QAZAQ GREEN. In 2025, 24.5% of the gross final electricity consumption of the Republic of Moldova was provided by renewable energy sources (RES). The increase in the share of electricity from RES was due to the growth in the number of RES electricity producers, as well as the dynamics of the total installed capacity at the country level, Logos Press reported citing the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED).
The share was estimated by correlating the production of electricity from RES with the gross final consumption of electricity, calculated on the basis of administrative information obtained from monitoring reports published on the official website of the National Energy Regulatory Agency and data collected on CNED’s own initiative.
Regarding producer-consumers, data on electricity production were estimated using the methodology provided for in Government Decision No. 74/2025 on the calculation of energy consumption from renewable sources.
At the end of 2025, the total installed capacity of RES exceeded 980 MW, compared to approximately 77 MW in 2020.
The dynamics of the sector are impressive: installed capacity has increased 12.7 times in the last five years. More than 400 MW of capacity was commissioned in 2025 alone, representing more than 40% of the total existing capacity and making it a record year for the country’s energy transformation.
The most common installed technology is photovoltaic, reaching 710.56 MW capacity, or 72% of the total capacity, followed by wind power with 246.52 MW installed capacity, or 25% of the total installed renewable energy capacity. Hydropower and biogas capacity is 16.75 MW (2%) and 7.16 MW (1%) respectively.
This development has been driven by both policy influences in this area and market dynamics. The support mechanisms regulated by the State have contributed to the active involvement of 8,713 consumer-producers by the end of 2025, including 5,051 beneficiaries through the net metering mechanism and 3,662 through net billing, contributing to the installation of 195.27 MW capacity, or 20% of the total installed renewable energy capacity.
At the same time, 153.89 MW (16%) of capacity was installed under the fixed tariff support mechanism, 33.24 MW (3%) under Law No. 160/2007 and 60 MW (6%) under the fixed price mechanism. In total, the state mechanisms contributed to the installation of 442.40 MW, representing 45% of the total existing capacity.
A significant part of renewable energy capacity operates on the free market, amounting to 538.58 MW (55%), of which 302.79 MW is PV, 219.29 MW is wind and 16.50 MW is hydropower. This fact emphasizes the economic feasibility of renewable energy production and is of interest to both local and international investors.
The year 2025 marked the launch of the first tenders for the construction of wind and photovoltaic power plants, including projects involving energy storage. These initiatives are aimed at achieving the goals of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Development Plan 2025-2030 of at least 27% of energy from renewable sources in total final energy consumption and at least 31.2% of electricity from renewable sources in total final electricity consumption.
