IEA: Benefits of energy efficiency for businesses go well beyond energy savings

QAZAQ GREEN. According to a new IEA report, energy efficiency measures have become a key driver of global development, allowing the economy to grow without a proportional increase in resource consumption.
Thanks to progress over the last 20 years, the global economy now produces 36% more GDP per unit of energy than in 2000. This has generated an "energy efficiency bonus" of nearly $50 trillion — an amount equivalent to adding almost two times the GDP of the United States.
The impact of energy efficiency extends well beyond macroeconomic indicators, directly shaping the labour market as well. Approximately 10 million people are currently employed in energy efficiency-related jobs globally, representing 15% of all energy sector employment. Moreover, every $1 million invested creates between 4 and 22 new jobs, making energy efficiency one of the most effective tools for stimulating employment.
Beyond its economic effect, improved energy efficiency also delivers tangible benefits for public health. In New Zealand, for example, home retrofit programs led to a 43% reduction in hospital admissions for respiratory conditions — clear evidence that more efficient housing reduces health risks and eases pressure on healthcare systems.
The environmental impact is equally significant. Since 2010, efficiency measures have avoided CO2 emissions equivalent to nearly 20% of the 2023 global total — more than the combined energy-related emissions of the EU and India.
In summary, the IEA emphasizes that energy efficiency not only saves money but also strengthens energy security by reducing countries' reliance on fossil fuel imports.
