Kazakhstan to achieve power surplus by 2027, driven in part by renewables

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan plans to fully cover the economy's electricity needs from the beginning of 2027 and subsequently build a sustained surplus of generating capacity. Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said at a Government meeting on July 1, 2026.
According to his report, a total of 13.3 GW of new generating capacity will be commissioned by 2029, of which 5.9 GW will come from renewable energy sources and 7.4 GW from base-load generation. Of the total, 12.56 GW represents new generation, while only 0.74 GW is designated to replace existing capacity.
Kazakhstan's energy system currently has a total installed capacity of 27.1 GW. Of 254 energy sources, 172 are classified as renewable, with total installed renewable capacity reaching 3.8 GW.
Last year, electricity generation reached a record high of 123.1 billion kWh, while consumption stood at 124.6 billion kWh. For the current year, output is forecast at 126.5 billion kWh.
The projected power surplus will not only meet domestic demand but also accommodate the energy-intensive infrastructure needs of artificial intelligence and large data centers.
