Hydnum Steel to receive €60 million to build green steel plant in the Pyrenees

QAZAQ GREEN.  Spanish manufacturer Hydnum Steel (HS) will receive €60 million to build the first green steel plant in the Iberian Peninsula. According to Kallanish, the financing was provided under the Spanish PERTE program, which is being implemented with the support of the European Recovery Plan – Next Generation EU, GMK Center reports.

The plant is planned to be built in Puertoiano, Castilla-La Mancha. The project is being implemented in partnership with investment company Helvella, Siemens, ABEI Energy and Russula Corp. It is currently at the final stage of administrative and technical approval. Construction is expected to start by the end of 2025.

According to the plan, the plant will be fully powered by renewable energy and will gradually introduce green hydrogen fuel. This will significantly reduce CO2 emissions in production. Annual production is expected to reach 1.5 million tons of flat products for the automotive, construction and renewable energy sectors.

The project enjoys strong institutional support. The regional authorities have given it priority status, and now Hydnum Steel is seeking the status of a “project of special interest” to speed up its implementation. In addition, the World Economic Forum has ranked the plant among the five most important industrial decarbonization initiatives in the world.

In early 2025, Hydnum Steel, the first green steel plant in Spain, announced the signing of a contract worth approximately €1 billion with the Spanish multinational Gonvarri Industries to supply green steel for the initial seven years of operation.
