Kazakhstan's renewable energy sector employs more than 20,000 people

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan's renewable energy sector employs 20,200 people. Such data is provided by the Kazakhstan Institute of Economic Research.

"In Kazakhstan, 20,200 people are employed in the renewable energy sector, of whom 8,300 are in solar energy, 7,200 are in wind power, and 4,700 are in hydropower," the report says.

According to the International Energy Agency, the global energy sector currently employs 65 million people (2% of global employment), including:

-        21 million people in fuel supply (coal, oil, gas, bioenergy, etc.);

-        20 million people in power sector (generation, transmission and distribution);

-        24 million people in the end uses (vehicle production, energy efficiency, etc.).

Meanwhile, the clean energy sector employs 52.6% of the total workforce due to a significant increase in the number of new projects. In particular, 34.2 million people are employed in such areas as production and installation of solar panels, cultivation of crops for biofuel, operation of hydropower plants, installation of energy-efficient technologies in buildings, assembly of electric cars, etc.

An interesting fact is that the level of employment in solar and wind energy (6.4 million people) is similar to the level of employment in oil production. In the renewables sector as a whole, the employment rate is 12.7 million, of whom 42% are employed in China.

Employment in green energy is projected to grow significantly, mainly due to new investments in decarbonisation projects. Under the International Energy Agency's "zero emissions by 2050" scenario, 14 million new clean energy jobs will be created by 2030, and another 16 million workers will move into new clean energy jobs, fully offsetting the continued loss of fossil fuel jobs.
