Almaty to present air quality improvement programs

QAZAQ GREEN. Natural air purification in urban areas can take up to 15 years, according to experts at the PowerTech 2025 Green Energy Forum & Exhibition. To tackle this issue, specialists from nine countries will collaborate on developing a comprehensive programs to improve air quality in major Central Asian cities.

Experts from Kazakhstan, China, Turkey, Austria, Oman, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, and Russia will propose strategies for green transport, low-carbon urban development, renewable energy, and environmental protection measures addressing air, water, and soil pollution.

"Air pollution in Almaty and other Kazakhstani cities is more than just an environmental challenge—it directly threatens public health, particularly for children and future generations. We must act now to move towards a greener future," said Alisher Kumargaliyev, General Manager of the International Center for Green Technologies and Investment Projects.

He emphasized that solar panel installations on buildings could reduce dependence on coal and oil, cutting emissions and improving air quality. However, he noted that a broader approach is essential, including better insulation, a shift to eco-friendly materials, modernization of heating and ventilation systems, and public education on energy efficiency.

"Clean air requires more than just technology—it demands a large-scale, government-backed program that combines energy-saving measures with environmental education. With investment and commitment, we can ensure a healthier future. The time to act is now," he added.

According to IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality monitoring company, Almaty ranked first in its 2025 global air pollution risk index, highlighting severe health hazards. The anti-ranking of 126 most polluted cities also includes Cairo (Egypt), Delhi (India), Wuhan (China), and Dhaka (Bangladesh).

"The alarming findings of international experts have been confirmed by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, which released an environmental report for January 2025. According to the document, out of 70 surveyed settlements, five were classified as having very high levels of air pollution, four as high, and 25 as elevated. The issue of clean air is becoming increasingly urgent and demands concrete action to improve environmental conditions," say the organizers of PowerTech 2025.

The PowerTech 2025 forum aims to serve as a key communication platform, where experts will present research, environmental programs, and innovative solutions. The event will bring together three specialized expos—Renewable Energy Expo, PowerTech Expo, and Energy Save Expo—at the Atakent Exhibition Center in Almaty.

With over 250 speakers and 3,000 industry professionals, the forum is expected to play a significant role in shaping the region’s sustainable development strategies.

Remind that, the PowerTech 2025: Central Asian Conference & Exhibition on Decarbonization and Renewable Energy will take place in Almaty from April 2 to 4, 2025, uniting industry leaders, investors, and policymakers to discuss solutions for air pollution, sustainability, and carbon footprint reduction in Central Asia.
