Masdar reaches major milestone in development of Kazakhstan’s 1GW wind farm
QAZAQ GREEN. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, in partnership with Kazakhstan, has achieved a significant step forward with the signing of an Investment Agreement for a 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan. This milestone agreement was signed on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, witnessed by top officials, including Nurlan Baibazarov, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy Almassadam Satkaliyev and Masdar's Director of Business and Project Development Abdulla Zayed formalized the agreement, marking Masdar’s first venture in Central Asia’s largest economy. Located in the Jambyl region, the wind farm includes a 600-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), underscoring Kazakhstan's push towards clean energy.
The project, co-developed by W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund, stands as a landmark investment that positions Kazakhstan as a major clean energy producer. With construction slated to begin by Q1 2026, the wind farm will generate power for approximately 300,000 homes and is expected to offset 2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, making it one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the joint commitment to renewable growth, saying, “Today marks an important milestone for the UAE and Kazakhstan, underscoring the strength of our strategic partnership. We are proud to support Kazakhstan’s net-zero ambitions and the UAE Consensus to triple renewable energy globally by 2030.”
Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev, highlighted the project’s importance, noting, “This 1GW wind farm in the Jambyl region is a testament to Kazakhstan’s renewable ambitions. We’re committed to achieving net-zero by 2060 and are pleased to collaborate with the UAE and Masdar in accelerating our energy transition.”
Aligned with Kazakhstan's climate goals, the wind farm in Jambyl region will help the country achieve its target of sourcing 15 percent of its energy from renewables by 2030, increasing to 50 percent by 2050, and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060. This initiative builds on the UAE’s commitment to help Kazakhstan expand its renewables sector, a partnership underscored at COP28.
Since its establishment in 2006, Masdar has led efforts to position the UAE as a global sustainability leader. With projects in over 40 countries, Masdar aims to reach a 100GW renewable portfolio by 2030, further supporting the region's transition to green energy and clean technologies.
