Global energy mix: key trends and myths debunked

QAZAQ GREEN. Alessandro Blasi, Senior Advisor to the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), recently shared insights on the state of global electricity generation in a LinkedIn post. He highlighted key trends shaping the energy landscape and addressed some common misconceptions.
Coal remains the dominant source of electricity worldwide. However, its influence is now primarily concentrated in Asia, as coal plants in many other regions are gradually being phased out.
Natural gas plays a crucial role in power generation, especially in resource-rich regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Russia.
Oil, once the leading source of electricity generation, has almost entirely disappeared from the global energy mix. It remains in limited use for peak demand in some parts of the Middle East but is steadily declining.
Nuclear power continues to be an important energy source, but its share in the global mix has halved over the past 30 years.
Hydropower, often overlooked, remains the world’s largest source of clean electricity and the most significant renewable energy contributor.
Wind and solar still account for a single-digit percentage of global electricity production, but their growth is accelerating at an unprecedented rate.
One key factor not visible in the chart is the rapid rise in electricity demand. Since the beginning of the 21st century, global electricity consumption has doubled—and it is set to increase even further in the coming years.
The chart shared by Blasi, created by Visual Capitalist, provides a clear snapshot of these trends and underscores the increasing relevance of electricity in our daily lives.
