Central Asia unites to develop green energy

QAZAQ GREEN. Astana hosted the first meeting of Central Asian energy ministers on Tuesday. The event was chaired by Almassadam Satkaliyev, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, according to a press release from the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.

In his opening remarks, the Kazakh Energy Minister highlighted the enormous potential for developing energy cooperation and strengthening existing ties between the countries of Central Asia.

He stated that among the challenges facing Central Asian countries today are global disruptions in the stability of energy supplies, fluctuations in oil and gas prices, and other factors.

"To ensure reliable energy supplies, it is necessary to develop mechanisms for forecasting and managing these challenges, as well as strengthening cooperation among our countries," proposed Satkaliyev.

He also called on his colleagues to intensify efforts to strengthen cooperation by expanding opportunities for energy trade, developing low-carbon initiatives, achieving carbon neutrality, and facilitating a gradual energy transition.

"In addition, an important factor in the development of regional cooperation is the comprehensive attraction of investments and the implementation of large-scale joint technological projects in the energy sector, in order to stimulate the development of modern energy infrastructure in the countries of Central Asia," the minister noted.

Satkaliyev emphasized the need to explore the possibility of implementing joint projects in the gas industry as well.

The Kazakh Energy Minister recalled that Kazakhstan is currently launching a global project in the development and transmission of green energy with the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Uzbekistan, and is also actively discussing the construction of the large-scale Kambarata HPP-1 with the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

"In this regard, I propose considering the possibility of implementing similar projects with the countries of the region, particularly in the gas industry," he suggested.

Following the meeting, the heads of the energy agencies of Central Asia signed a communiqué that will lay the foundation for further successful cooperation in all key areas between the countries.
