Honda and Astrobotic to study scalable lunar power systems

QAZAQ GREEN. Honda and Astrobotic have signed a joint development agreement to explore scalable power solutions for future lunar missions. The study will focus on integrating Honda’s regenerative fuel cell (RFC) technology with Astrobotic’s Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT), part of the company’s LunaGrid lunar power service.
Honda’s RFC system uses solar energy and water to produce electricity, hydrogen and oxygen in a closed cycle. It stores solar energy as hydrogen during the lunar day and converts it back into electricity at night, with water as the only byproduct.
Astrobotic is developing LunaGrid to provide continuous, large-scale power on the Moon. Its VSAT systems — currently designed in 10 kW and 50 kW configurations — track sunlight for optimal energy capture.
The joint study will assess illumination conditions at lunar South Pole sites, evaluate the scalability of Honda’s RFC, and define technical requirements for integration with LunaGrid. The combined system aims to ensure reliable power through the lunar night, enabling longer missions, human presence, and future lunar industries.
