Kazakhstan to commission nine renewable energy facilities totaling 455 MW in 2025

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan is set to bring online nine renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of 455 megawatts this year, as Kazakhstan accelerates its transition toward sustainable energy, according to the Ministry of Energy.

The development aligns with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's recent emphasis on prioritizing green economy initiatives, particularly renewable energy expansion. The Ministry of Energy's press service confirmed that three stations representing 90 MW of the planned capacity have already begun operations.

Currently, Kazakhstan operates 156 renewable energy installations with a total installed capacity of 3,122 MW. These facilities generated 7.58 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2024, representing 6.43% of the country's total power production.

The renewable energy sector expansion is supported by strategic partnerships with international investors, whose collective project portfolio is valued at 4.8 GW. Under current development plans, Kazakhstan aims to implement at least 8.4 GW of new renewable energy capacity by 2035.

Small-scale generation is experiencing significant growth through the country's net consumer mechanism, which enables individuals and businesses to operate their own renewable installations and sell excess electricity back to the grid. The program saw remarkable expansion in 2024, with the number of contracts more than doubling from 47 to 103, while the capacity of small-scale facilities reached 6.2 MW.

The renewable energy push represents a cornerstone of Kazakhstan's sustainable development strategy, designed to enhance energy security while creating employment opportunities and attracting foreign investment. The initiative positions the country as a regional leader in the transition to a modern green economy.
