CHN Energy launches China’s first renewable energy-powered railway system

QAZAQ GREEN. CHN Energy has put into operation China’s first integrated “renewable energy + railway power supply” project along the Baoshen Railway, linking Baotou in Inner Mongolia with Shenmu in Shaanxi Province. The system combines solar power generation with the existing railway traction network, marking a breakthrough in the application of clean energy to heavy freight transport.
The project takes advantage of Northwest China’s dry climate and abundant sunlight to generate electricity from solar panels. Power is supplied in a hybrid mode, using both conventional grid electricity and solar energy, while an intelligent control system ensures stable operation. Energy storage devices allow surplus solar power to be stored and released during peak demand, increasing overall efficiency.
The new system is expected to deliver about 7.4 million kWh of green electricity annually, cutting the use of around 2,200 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 5,800 tons. The initiative not only advances China’s renewable energy development in the “Three North” regions but also offers a model for sustainable railway power supply worldwide.
