QAZAQ GREEN.  The Republic of Moldova has surpassed the threshold of 1 GW (Gigawatt) of installed capacity from renewable energy sources, reaching 1,023.42 MW. The data were presented today by the National Centre for Sustainable Energy (CNED), MoldPress reported.

In a single year there was an increase of about 69% in total installed capacities. Thus, by the end of 2025, total installed capacity had reached 980.98 MW, which is 444.02 MW more than at the end of 2024, when it stood at approximately 580 MW. In the first two months of 2026, 42.44 MW of new renewable energy capacities were installed.

At the same time, over the last five years, installed capacities have increased 13.23 times. Compared to 2020, when total installed capacity was only 77.37 MW, there is an increase of 946.05 MW, with 2025 playing a decisive role in this evolution.

According to CNED, this achievement marks a landmark moment in the national energy transition and reflects the accelerated development of domestic electricity generation capacities from renewable sources.

The most widespread technology remains photovoltaics, with an installed capacity of 747.00 MW, representing 73% of total renewable energy capacities. This is followed by wind energy, which has reached 252.52 MW (25%). Hydropower and biogas capacities amount to 16.75 MW (1%) and 7.16 MW (1%), respectively.

In the summer of last year, the country reached a historic milestone in green energy production. On Saturday, August 23, at 12:00, the country’s electricity consumption was fully covered by local energy production from renewable sources.

The authorities are setting ambitious objectives in this field, with strategic targets established for 2030: at least 27% energy from renewable sources in gross final energy consumption and at least 31.2% electricity from renewable sources in gross final electricity consumption.
