Solar pumps and drip irrigation help Kyrgyz farmers cut costs amid rising energy prices

QAZAQ GREEN. A project to introduce renewable energy and energy-saving technologies to Kyrgyzstan's agricultural sector is gaining momentum. The initiative is being implemented by the Public Foundation Centre for RES Development and Energy Efficiency together with German Agro Action, with support from the Small Grants and Climate Innovation Fund (SGCIF) funded by the UK government. It forms part of a broader regional programme on climate risk management in Central Asia, Open.kg reports.
In the first quarter of 2026, a series of hands-on installation and demonstration events got under way. Farmers are being introduced to solar photovoltaic systems for autonomous power supply to pumps and ventilation, heat pumps to reduce heating costs in greenhouses and processing facilities, and solar tunnel dryers that process fruit and vegetables twice as fast as conventional methods while protecting produce from contamination and insects.
A key focus is drip irrigation: with water scarcity worsening across the region, the technology can cut water consumption by up to 70%. Solar-powered electric fences are also on offer as a low-cost alternative to conventional barriers for protecting fields from livestock and wildlife.
"Farmers are facing rising energy prices, water shortages and climate risks. Our goal is to offer affordable, practical solutions," said Tatyana Vedeneva, president of the foundation.
Training participants have responded positively. A young farmer from the Toktogul district said the project changed his assumptions about cost. "We thought we would need 500,000 soms, but it turned out we could do it for half that — with high quality and even water distribution," he said. "I'm 25, just starting out, and I realised I need to keep learning."
Organisers plan to establish demonstration sites showcasing all key technologies, alongside training for technical specialists and support for local equipment suppliers.
