Alatau city to integrate renewables, Smart Grid and hydrogen for sustainable growth

QAZAQ GREEN. On October 15–16, Seoul hosted the international roadshow ALATAU RISE With Kazakhstan, dedicated to the national project Alatau city – the city of the future. The Kazakh delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev.
The event aimed to attract investment and strengthen Kazakhstan–Korea cooperation. The master plan of Alatau city, developed with leading companies from Singapore and the Republic of Korea, envisions innovations in industry, energy, mobility, and sustainable urban living.
Deputy Minister of Energy Bakytzhan Ilyas presented the Ministry’s strategy for developing a modern energy infrastructure for Alatau city. The plan includes integrating renewable energy sources and Smart Grid technologies to meet projected demand of up to 2000 MW. Two supply scenarios are under consideration — a combined model using gas turbine units and connection to the national power grid.
The heating system will combine centralized, decentralized, and alternative solutions such as solar collectors, heat pumps, and hydrogen technologies.
Ilyas emphasized the central role of hydrogen energy, noting its potential for clean transport, balancing energy systems with high shares of renewables, and fertilizer production in agriculture.
He also highlighted Kazakhstan’s interest in cooperation with South Korea on technology transfer, investments, safety standards, hydrogen mobility, and human capital development.
During the event, the Kazakh Ministry of Energy and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding under the H2G initiative to promote clean hydrogen and green growth projects. Both parties agreed to advance eco-friendly technologies, strengthen international cooperation, and reduce the carbon footprint of the energy sector.
