Kazakhstan to achieve energy system surplus by 2029 – Energy Ministry

QAZAQ GREEN. The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan plans to implement 68 projects aimed at adding 6.7 GW of new generating capacity to the national energy system by 2029. The announcement was made by Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov at a government meeting.
According to him, more than 770 MW of new capacity was commissioned last year, including 608 MW from traditional sources and 163 MW from renewable energy.
In total, the Ministry intends to complete 68 projects providing 6.7 GW of new capacity by 2029. In 2025, more than 621 MW is expected to be added, including 166 MW from traditional energy and nine renewable energy facilities. By 2027, about 1,500 MW of new capacity will be commissioned, including 13 renewable projects with a combined capacity of 573 MW.
In 2028, more than 2,000 MW of capacity will be put into operation, including three renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 245 MW.
“By 2029, Kazakhstan’s energy system is expected to fully meet the country’s electricity demand and generate a surplus, enhancing the nation’s export potential,” said Yerlan Akkenzhenov.
He added that work continues on the Energy Sector Development Plan until 2035, which envisions the commissioning of an additional 26 GW of new generation capacity.
