Kazakhstan and South Korea explore joint hydropower development opportunities

QAZAQ GREEN. Deputy Minister of Energy Sungat Esimkhanov and Director General of the KAZENERGY Association Zhandos Nurmaganbetov paid a working visit to the Republic of Korea. The visit, organised by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), focused on enhancing expertise in hydropower asset management and identifying new areas for cooperation in the hydropower sector.
The Kazakh delegation took part in a technical programme hosted by the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) in Daejeon. The programme addressed water resource management policies, advanced hydropower technologies, and practical approaches to implementing and financing medium-scale hydropower projects.
As part of the visit, delegates toured K-water’s Integrated Water Management Centre and the Daecheong Dam.
Meetings were also held with Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. (KOMIPO), Korea South-East Power Co., Ltd. (KOEN), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (KHNP), and the Korea Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation (KIND). The discussions focused on prospects for jointly developing a cascade hydropower project in southeastern Kazakhstan.
The visit marked a significant step in strengthening international cooperation and advancing Kazakhstan’s transition toward a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy system.
