Kazakhstan launches nine renewable energy projects in 2025

QAZAQ GREEN.  According to the Ministry of Energy, Kazakhstan now operates 162 renewable energy facilities with a combined installed capacity of 3.5 GW. The portfolio includes 67 wind farms, 49 solar power plants, 43 hydropower plants, and three biogas facilities.

By the end of 2025, renewables accounted for 7% of total electricity generation, up from 6.43% in 2024, indicating steady progress toward a more balanced energy mix.

In 2025, nine new renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 503 MW were commissioned. These included five wind farms (387 MW), three solar power plants (90 MW), and one hydropower plant (26 MW). The projects were implemented across Karaganda, Ulytau, Aktobe, Zhetisu, Kyzylorda, and Mangistau regions.

Market development continues through competitive auctions under the 2024–2027 plan, which targets 6.7 GW of new capacity. By December 2025, around 4 GW had already been allocated, reflecting strong investor demand and sustained market activity.

Several large-scale projects involve international strategic investors, including TotalEnergies (Total Eren), Masdar, China Power International Holding, and China Energy.

Kazakhstan plans to deploy more than 8 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the energy transition, energy security, and the resilience of the national power system.
