France tests world’s first highway with charge-as-you-drive technology

QAZAQ GREEN. The Charge as you Drive project, led by VINCI Autoroutes in partnership with Electreon, Gustave Eiffel University, and Hutchinson, has reached a new milestone with the world’s first real-world trial of dynamic wireless charging on a motorway. According to the VINCI Autoroutes website, the pilot section covers 1.5 kilometres of the A10 motorway near Paris.
Four prototype vehicles — a truck, van, car, and bus — equipped with wireless charging receivers are now being tested in actual traffic conditions to evaluate the system’s performance. Initial results show that the inductive technology can deliver more than 300 kW of instantaneous power and over 200 kW on average under optimal driving conditions.
If deployed at scale, this charging-while-driving system could significantly reduce the size and weight of electric vehicle batteries — by several tonnes for heavy-duty trucks — lowering their cost, improving efficiency, and cutting both carbon and material footprints. It would also eliminate downtime for recharging and remove range limitations.
With the transport sector accounting for nearly one-third of France’s greenhouse gas emissions and the majority of freight moved by road, this technological breakthrough represents a major step forward in the country’s decarbonisation efforts. The A10 motorway tests mark a key stage in advancing dynamic wireless charging technology worldwide.
