WWEA: Global wind power growth accelerates in H1 2025

QAZAQ GREEN.  The global wind energy sector showed strong momentum in the first half of 2025, with new installations up by 64% compared to the same period in 2024. According to the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), a total of 72.2 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity were added worldwide from January to June 2025, following 44.1 GW installed in the first half of last year.

Between July 2024 and June 2025, 148 GW of new capacity were added globally, bringing total installed wind capacity to 1,245 GW (1.25 terawatts). Wind energy now supplies around 12% of global electricity demand, marking an annual growth rate of 13.5%.

China remains the main driver of global expansion, adding 51.4 GW in the first half of the year — more than double the figure recorded a year earlier. Other key markets include India (3.5 GW), the United States (2.1 GW), Germany (1.9 GW), France (1.7 GW), and Brazil (1.3 GW). Brazil has consolidated its position as the world’s fifth-largest wind market, while Turkey has surpassed Italy to become the eleventh.

WWEA projects that by the end of 2025, total global wind capacity will exceed 1,320 GW, setting a new record for annual installations of about 150 GW. This growth reflects not only delayed project completions from 2024 but also accelerated investment activity as countries move to secure their renewable energy transitions.

“The first half of 2025 has been a defining period for wind power — a record of resilience and global confidence in renewables,” said WWEA President Dr. Irfan Mirza. “Wind energy is not just an economic or technological solution; it is a moral imperative for our planet.”

The upcoming 22nd World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC2025) will take place from 3 to 5 December 2025 in Shantou, China, focusing on community engagement, inclusive growth, and global policy cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
