Meta to invest in space solar energy and ultra-long-duration energy storage

QAZAQ GREEN. Meta has announced two partnerships in the field of innovative energy — with Overview Energy and Noon Energy — to ensure reliable power supply for its AI infrastructure and data centres. The total volume of each agreement reaches up to 1 GW.
Under the partnership with Overview Energy, Meta plans to harness solar energy collected directly in space. The company's satellites operate in geosynchronous orbit approximately 22,000 miles above Earth's equator, where sunlight is constant. The collected energy is transmitted to ground-based solar farms as low-intensity near-infrared light, enabling them to generate electricity around the clock — including at night. The technology does not require new land or additional grid infrastructure, as it builds on existing facilities. An orbital demonstration is planned for 2028, with commercial delivery to the US grid potentially beginning as early as 2030. Meta is among the first major technology companies to secure a capacity reservation for space solar energy.
The agreement with Noon Energy provides for the deployment of ultra-long-duration energy storage with a capacity of up to 1 GW/100 GWh. The company's technology is based on modular reversible solid oxide fuel cells and carbon-based storage, enabling energy retention for over 100 hours — far beyond what today's lithium-ion batteries can deliver. An initial pilot project of 25 MW/2.5 GWh is planned, with completion expected in 2028. This represents one of the largest commitments to ultra-long-duration storage in the industry.
According to the company, both partnerships complement Meta's existing energy portfolio: to date, the company has contracted more than 30 GW of clean and renewable energy, including agreements in geothermal and nuclear energy totalling 7.7 GW.
