Ørsted launches mockingbird solar center, donates land for prairie conservation
QAZAQ GREEN. Renewable energy leader Ørsted has officially launched the Mockingbird Solar Center, its largest solar farm to date, in Lamar County, Texas. With a capacity of 468 MW, the project will generate clean energy for 80,000 homes and businesses while contributing $75 million in local property taxes and creating hundreds of jobs, according to the company.
As part of the initiative, Ørsted completed a significant land donation of 953 acres to The Nature Conservancy (TNC), establishing the Smiley Meadow Preserve. This protected area will conserve rare tallgrass prairie, a vital ecosystem that supports biodiversity, carbon storage, and pollinator habitats.
“We are thrilled to bring the Mockingbird Solar Center online and contribute to Texas' renewable energy landscape,” said Melissa Peterson, Ørsted's Head of Onshore Development. “Through our partnership with The Nature Conservancy, we’ve not only delivered clean energy but also ensured the preservation of an irreplaceable piece of Texas’ natural heritage.”
At a community event celebrating the achievements, TNC’s Texas State Director Suzanne Scott highlighted the collaboration: “Thanks to Ørsted’s vision, we’ve safeguarded a pristine prairie ecosystem. This project demonstrates the power of partnerships to deliver ecological and economic benefits.”
The Smiley Meadow Preserve, home to over 400 native plant species, marks the largest conservation effort for a rare Texas prairie. Less than 1% of the state’s original tallgrass prairies remain, making this preservation a milestone for biodiversity and heritage restoration.
In addition to its environmental impact, the Mockingbird Solar Center represents a $500 million investment in Texas, creating over 550 construction jobs and ongoing maintenance roles. The project sources panels from U.S.-based First Solar and partners with local businesses for materials and services. Ørsted also donated $50,000 to local fire departments, funding essential equipment and facilities improvements.
Paris Mayor Mihir "Mark" Pankaj praised the dual benefits of clean energy and habitat conservation: “This project is a shining example of how development can uplift both our economy and environment.”
With the Mockingbird Solar Center now operational, Ørsted continues its momentum in U.S. renewable energy, managing over 6 GW of wind, solar, and battery storage projects nationwide.
