Europe’s rising heat: Can renewables provide the solution?

QAZAQ GREEN.  As Europe cements its status as the world’s fastest-warming continent, the 2025 European State of the Climate (ESOTC) report highlights a critical race between accelerating climate extremes and the region’s energy transition. With temperatures reaching dangerous new heights, the expansion of renewable energy is becoming Europe's primary tool for both mitigating future warming and adapting to the current crisis.

The Warming Reality The scale of the heat in 2025 was unprecedented:

  • Extreme Coverage: At least 95% of the continent experienced above-average annual temperatures.
  • Arctic Heatwaves: A record three-week heatwave saw temperatures within the Arctic Circle exceed 30°C, peaking at nearly 35°C in Norway.
  • Widespread Impacts: This heat contributed to the largest area of wildfires on record (over 1 million hectares) and record-breaking sea surface temperatures.

The Role of Renewables: A Success Story in Progress The report suggests that while the climate is changing rapidly, Europe’s shift to clean energy is one of the few areas keeping pace with the need for adaptation. In 2025, the renewable energy sector reached several major milestones:

  • Dominating the Grid: Renewables supplied nearly half—46.4%—of all electricity in Europe.
  • Solar Surge: Solar power hit a new record, contributing 12.5% of the continent’s total electricity.

Will They Be Enough? Experts from the ECMWF and WMO emphasize that the "clean energy transition" is a vital part of Europe's strategic ambition to protect its economy and environment. However, they warn that the speed of climate change—evidenced by 70% of rivers seeing below-average flows and massive glacier loss—demands even more urgent action.

The consensus in the report is that while renewable energy is a powerful "present reality" of adaptation, it must be paired with broader efforts to restore biodiversity and strengthen ecosystem resilience to truly counter the impacts of a warming world.
