ADB to invest $70 billion in Asia's power grids and digital infrastructure

QAZAQ GREEN. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will mobilize $70 billion for energy and digital infrastructure development across the Asia-Pacific region by 2035. The announcement was made by ADB President Masato Kanda at a press conference held during the bank's Annual Meeting in Samarkand.
The initiative comprises two major pillars. Under the Pan-Asia Power Grid Initiative, $50 billion will be mobilized for cross-border power infrastructure. By 2035, ADB aims to integrate around 20 GW of renewable energy across borders, connect 22,000 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines, improve energy access for 200 million people, create 840,000 jobs, and reduce regional power sector emissions by 15%.
The second pillar — the Asia-Pacific Digital Highway — will mobilize $20 billion for digital corridors, data centers, and AI-ready infrastructure. By 2035, the initiative targets first-time broadband access for 200 million people and improved connectivity for another 450 million, a roughly 40% reduction in connectivity costs in remote areas, and the creation of 4 million jobs. A Center for AI Innovation and Development will be established in Seoul, backed by the Government of the Republic of Korea.
ADB expects to finance approximately half of each initiative from its own resources, with the remainder raised through cofinancing, including from the private sector.
