Google signs first geothermal energy agreement in Asia with Baseload Capital

QAZAQ GREEN. Google has signed its first corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) for geothermal energy in Asia. The agreement, concluded with global geothermal developer Baseload Capital, marks the first corporate geothermal PPA in Taiwan.
The initial projects will supply 10 megawatts (MW) of geothermal electricity to Taiwan’s power grid. This initiative aims to support the country’s renewable energy targets and foster the development of geothermal technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement also includes an equity investment by Google in Baseload Capital.
Taiwan, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, possesses significant geothermal resources. Geothermal energy, which provides a stable and continuous power supply, can complement other renewable sources such as wind and solar.
Since 2019, Baseload Capital’s local subsidiary, Baseload Power Taiwan, has been conducting geothermal exploration and working with government authorities to improve regulatory conditions. The newly signed PPAs are expected to contribute to Taiwan’s objective of reaching 6 gigawatts (GW) of geothermal capacity by 2050.
In addition to Taiwan, Google is engaged in geothermal-related initiatives in other regions, including partnerships in Australia, and technology development projects with companies like Fervo Energy and Project Innerspace.
