Kazakhstan plans to add 660 MW of hydropower capacity by 2030

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan is set to expand its hydropower sector, with plans to commission approximately 660 MW of new capacity by 2030 under existing investment agreements, the Ministry of Energy reported.

At present, 43 hydropower facilities with a combined installed capacity of 313 MW are operating across the country. In 2025, the sector grew further with the commissioning of the 26 MW Korinskaya HPP-2 in the Zhetysu region.

By the end of 2025, electricity generation from renewable energy sources reached 8.621 billion kWh. Of this total, small and medium-sized hydropower plants accounted for 1.196 billion kWh.

To enhance transparency and attract private investment, the Ministry of Energy continues to rely on a competitive auction system. In 2025, 500 MW of capacity designated specifically for hydropower projects was offered through auctions.

The highest concentration of renewable energy facilities, including hydropower plants, is located in the southern and eastern parts of the country, with the Zhambyl, Almaty and Zhetysu regions leading in installed capacity.

According to the Ministry, the planned hydropower projects will help diversify Kazakhstan’s energy mix and improve electricity supply in remote areas by harnessing the natural potential of the country’s river systems.
