Turkish-Chinese duo to build 1-GWh battery complex in Turkey

QAZAQ GREEN. Turkish engineering company Kontrolmatik Enerji ve Muhendislik AS has clinched a deal with China’s Harbin Electric Co Ltd to install a wind farm and a 1-GWh battery energy storage system in western Turkey, Renewables Now reports.

According to a bourse filing on Tuesday, Kontrolmatik’s Progresiva Enerji Yatirimlari Ticaret AS is the main investor, while its Chinese partner will provide some USD 300 million (EUR 276.4m) as co-financing. Harbin will also act as the project’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

The proposed energy storage project will be installed in Turkey’s Tekirdag province will create the country’s first Gigawatt-hour battery site. Kontrolmatik’s subsidiary Pomega will be responsible for delivering the battery units, the commissioning of which is scheduled for 2025. The complex will have a four-hour discharge capacity.

As part of the project, Kontrolmatik will also install a 250-MW wind power plant consisting of 50 turbines with an estimated annual output of 875 million kWh.
