QatarEnergy partners TotalEnergies for 1.25GW solar project in Iraq

QAZAQ GREEN. On October 28, 2024, QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with TotalEnergies to jointly develop a substantial solar power project in Iraq, as part of the country’s Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). This partnership marks a key step in enhancing Iraq’s renewable energy capacity.
Under the terms of the agreement, which awaits regulatory approval, QatarEnergy will acquire a 50% stake in the solar photovoltaic initiative, while TotalEnergies will retain the remaining half. The project will feature 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels on single-axis trackers, making it one of the world’s largest solar installations. Once completed, the plant will be capable of generating up to 1.25 gigawatts (GW) of peak solar power for Iraq’s Basra region, with phased developments set to come online between 2025 and 2027. This energy is expected to supply approximately 350,000 homes with clean electricity.
Commenting on the agreement, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi stated, “We are pleased to take part in this transformative project for Iraq’s energy sector and look forward to advancing it with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies. We extend our thanks to the Iraqi government for their trust and to TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power growth.”
In June 2023, QatarEnergy joined the GGIP consortium, holding a 25% interest alongside TotalEnergies (45%) and Iraq’s Basra Oil Company (30%). The GGIP represents a strategic effort to harness Iraq’s natural resources by constructing facilities to capture and use gas otherwise flared in the Basra region, directing it to meet the power demands of local generation plants.
