Kazakhstan intends to reduce the share of coal-fired generation to 34% by 2035

QAZAQ GREEN. Kazakhstan is set to decrease its reliance on coal-fired generation through the adoption of renewable and alternative energy sources, along with the integration of gas generation. Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev announced this initiative during a government meeting on January 16.
"Upon the successful implementation of the Action Plan for the development of the electricity sector, the distribution of installed capacity by fuel type by 2035 is projected as follows:
· Renewable Energy Sources (RES) - 24.4%
· Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPP) - 10.8%
· Gas - 25.8%
· Coal - 34.3%
· Nuclear Power Plants - 4.7%," stated the minister.
He emphasized that a substantial reduction in the coal-fired generation share in the overall electricity consumption will be achieved through the incorporation of renewable and alternative energy sources, as well as gas-fired generation.
"By 2035, the target is to achieve a carbon offset of 44 million tonnes of CO2 annually," highlighted Almassadam Satkaliyev.
Currently, Kazakhstan has 220 power plants, 144 of which are renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 2.8 GW. Over the past year, 16 new renewable energy facilities were also added with a total capacity of 495.6 MW.
