Renewables account for over 6% of Kazakhstan’s energy mix in 2024

QAZAQ GREEN. The share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (RES) in Kazakhstan exceeded 6% by the end of 2024, reaching 6.43%. This figure is nearly double the share recorded in 2020, when renewables contributed just 3% to the national energy mix. According to the Ministry of Energy, this steady growth reflects the consistent implementation of government programmes aimed at developing a green economy.
Kazakhstan has demonstrated stable year-on-year growth in renewable energy generation over the past five years:
- 2021 – 3.69%
- 2022 – 4.53%
- 2023 – 5.92%
- 2024 – 6.43%
This upward trend has been made possible through targeted government efforts to enhance the investment climate in the renewables sector. The adoption of international best practices, the implementation of systemic support measures, and investor-funded construction and operation of renewable energy facilities have all played a role in boosting generation capacity.
As of today, Kazakhstan operates 154 renewable energy facilities with a combined installed capacity exceeding 3 GW. These include:
- 63 wind power plants (1,570.05 MW)
- 46 solar power plants (1,222.61 MW)
- 42 small hydropower plants (287.685 MW)
- 3 biogas plants (1.77 MW)
The development of renewable energy remains a key priority in Kazakhstan’s energy policy, contributing to sustainable energy security and the country’s efforts to combat climate change.
