KazMunayGas and Eni launched a 50 MW solar power plant in Zhanaozen

QAZAQ GREEN. KazMunayGas JSC and Italian energy company Eni S.p.A. have completed construction and commissioned a 50 MW solar power plant in Zhanaozen, Mangistau Region, according to the KMG press service. The opening ceremony was attended by Mazhilis Deputy Edil Zhanbirsin, KMG Chairman of the Management Board Askhat Khasenov, Deputy Akim of Mangistau region Yerbol Izbergenov, Samruk-Kazyna Oil and Gas Assets Department Director Zhandos Kairgeldi, Chairman and Managing Director of Eni in Kazakhstan Seger Hoitink, Managing Director of Plenitude Kazakhstan Federico Pugliese, and Plenitude Head of Renewable Energy Alessandro Della Zoppa.
The facility marks the first stage of a 247 MW Hybrid Power Plant project that will integrate solar, wind, and gas generation under KMG’s Low Carbon Development Programme.
The solar plant covers about 80 hectares and is equipped with more than 80,000 bifacial LONGi panels, capable of generating power on both sides. It is expected to produce 86 million kWh of clean electricity annually. The hybrid system will combine renewable output with gas-based generation to ensure stable supply regardless of weather conditions.
Construction of the solar plant involved up to 250 workers, while 122 specialists are currently employed at the gas power plant site. The solar facility will supply electricity to KMG subsidiaries Ozenmunaygaz JSC and KazGPZ LLP, helping to stabilize production processes.
By 2026, KMG and Eni plan to complete two additional facilities: a 77 MW wind power plant and a 120 MW gas power plant. Once fully operational, the hybrid complex will balance renewable and traditional generation.
“This project is the result of many years of cooperation between KMG and Eni and a direct contribution to Kazakhstan’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy to 2060. It was made possible with consistent state support. After the full launch, about 40% of the complex’s electricity will come from renewables, significantly reducing the carbon footprint while ensuring reliable oil and gas operations. Thanks to the professionalism of the team, the project was completed on schedule,” said Askhat Khasenov.
